About Hugh Blanding
I am a self-taught artist painting since my early teens. I started to sculpt in the late 1990's after I retired from the computer industry and have found my forte in the 3-dimension.
I feel I am blessed with an innate talent for artistic expression and although I pursue music, drawing, painting, and other forms of art, I am now primarily a sculptor. I love the additional challenge that the third dimension presents, the challenge to create a work of art that must be aesthetically pleasing when viewed from all angles - the top, the bottom, the back, the front, and the sides.
As an Arizona transplant, I was intrigued by the history and traditions of the west. I visited historical sights. I attended local rodeos, shooting exhibitions, and calf-roping contests. I read books dealing with the legends of the west. I studied bone and muscle anatomy and I studied the artwork of Remington. When I began sculpting, I knew I wanted to create traditional cowboy sculptures that would show the action, the energy, the spirit and the freedom of this west thus sharing with others some of the heritage I found so exciting. I have since expanded my repertoire to include Native American, Equine & Wildlife, and a few Romantic & Classical sculptures.
I am a juried member of the Arizona Artist Guild and have exhibited my work in many of the major juried Fine Art shows throughout the West. I have had a studio at the Arizona Fine Art Expo in Scottsdale for the past 9 years and will be there again January thru March 2014.
